The border troops of the KGB of the USSR are troops designed to guard and protect the state border of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, prevent and suppress encroachments on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the USSR.
Structurally, they were part of the USSR State Security Committee (KGB of the USSR, until 1978 β the KGB under the Council of Ministers of the USSR). They were also considered an integral part of the Armed Forces of the USSR in the period from September 1, 1939 to March 21, 1989.
